Know the Risks

Between 2010 and 2016, the FDA received 79 reports of serious infections caused by contaminated heater-cooler devices and 12 associated deaths. These Stockert 3T products use water within the product as a means through which to control body temperature while a person undergoes an invasive surgery. The most common types of surgeries that require the use of heater-cooler devices are open-heart surgery and open-chest bypass surgery.

Symptoms of infection include:

  • Abnormal fatigue
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Night sweats
  • Persistent coughing, especially with blood
  • Redness and irritation at the surgical site

While most infections can be treated through the administration of medicines, there have been reports of severe infections and even death caused as a result of Stockert 3T heater-cooler device infections.
