What is Distracted Driving?
Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a person's attention away from the task of driving. While most people think of distracted driving as something that involves a driver's eyes, taking their eyes off the road is just one type of distraction.
In fact, there are three main types of distractions that can impact a driver's ability to drive safely:
- Visual distractions: These are distractions that cause a driver to take their eyes off the road. Examples include looking at a cell phone, programming a GPS, and looking at a passenger or child in the backseat.
- Manual distractions: These are distractions that cause a driver to take their hands off the wheel. Examples include eating, drinking, smoking, adjusting the radio, and reaching for an object.
- Cognitive distractions: These are distractions that cause a driver to take their mind off the task of driving. Examples include daydreaming, talking on a cell phone or to a passenger, and thinking about personal problems.
Texting and driving is one of the most dangerous types of distracted driving because it involves all three types of distractions. When a person texts while driving, they must take their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel, and their mind off the task of driving. This means they are not only distracted, but they are also not paying attention to the road at all. It is no wonder, then, that texting and driving is so dangerous.
