Dangerous Takata Airbags Still Installed in Brand New Cars

Crash testYou've probably already heard about the recalled Takata airbags, which have killed 10 people and caused over a hundred injuries in the US already. Well, then you might be extremely surprised to learn that 4 automakers are still installing these airbags in new vehicles to be sold in the US. Vehicles using these defective safety features must be recalled by 2018, but that hasn't stopped Volkswagen, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Fiat Chrysler from continuing to roll out the device in cars fresh off the assembly line. That's because the law allows carmakers and dealers to sell cars that are subject to a future recall, yet aren't required to inform consumers which vehicles will be recalled. So far, new vehicles known to have the malfunctioning airbag are the:

  • 2016 Audi TT
  • 2016 Mitsubishi I-MiEV
  • 2016 Volkswagen CC
  • 2017 Mitsubishi I-MiEV
  • 2017 Audi R8

Until lawmakers require dealers and manufacturers to take responsibility for their products and inform consumers when they're buying a potentially dangerous vehicle, it's up to us to stay on top of the latest Takata airbag news. That means always doing your homework before you buy a new car, and never accepting a dealer's answer if it goes against your own research and gut instinct. #takataairbagrecall
